To Mime Or Not To Mime

When you get an audition scene that requires your character to eat, drink, walk through a door…how do you handle it?

Do you mime?  Do you not mime?

That is the question.

Check out today’s video for answers!

Remember, an audition is an unnatural situation to begin with.  You don’t have a set, props, wardrobe, lighting or a scene partner.  When the viewer sees you mime that coffee cup, it immediately reminds us that what we’re watching isn’t real.

Even if you do an incredible job of suggesting an invisible prop, the viewer starts to think, “Wow, she’s really great at miming.”

When you focus on suggesting the emotional reality of the scene, the viewer will focus on the power of your work, not your miming skills!

  1. Fun video but I wish you would have also done the lines without the mime as well to help illustrate the actual point, that mime is mostly unnecessary. Thanks. Always enjoy your videos.

  2. Love these videos, thanks. And I agree with Joe in that it would have been great to also demonstrate audition without the mime as well. Thanks as always. 🙂

  3. Love all your videos. Fun way to start my day. The banjo, not so much-makes it tough to understand some of your words.
Adoption papers on their way. 🙂
    Best,
